I am amazed that this place has any good reviews. We waited an hour for our food! When we did get it, it was like cafeteria school food. We all felt sick after eating there, and when I walked past the kitchen, the pots looked like they hadn't been washed in months! It's your basic bar food. But worse. Definitely won't go back. I felt bad for our server, I think she was the only one working that night. Really got our vaca off to a bad start, paying $70 for crappy food. Sheesh.

Alright folks, if you are a walk on eggshells type person or a little prissy, skip this one or just man up, yes it's not the picture perfect quaint restaurant but that's the point...it's a great BBQ joint, that's it, my boys and I come every year for fly fishing and we like the attitude and the food is good and yes it isn't always perfect but have you ever actually cooked BBQ, not easy so enjoy it as it comes...life is good at the Double Z

Pretty sure the cook is drunk. He is drinking beer and taking shots. Our order was wrong and we could here him complaining about us. Don't eat here.

We are skiing in Steamboat and we ordered to-go food from here. The food was amazing, great taste, fast delivery! Being from Texas and knowing great barbecue and this barbecue was amazing, very impressed! I highly recommend to everyone!

Authentic, local steamboat atmosphere. Now accepts credit cards!!!!! Food is amazing, ranch is to die for. Fries, hand cut and golden brown to perfection. Anything on the menu is amazing. BBQ is hand made and sold by the quart (along with the ranch). Prices are very reasonable for a BBQ place in a resort town. If you are looking for a great lunch with huge portions, swing on in, though seating is limited in the winter time without the deck options. Would always recommend!

It pains me to give Double Z less than 5-stars because I grew up eating there and consider it a mandatory stop every time I am in town. The last time I went I was a bit disappointed by the Z-Burger though. It was still really good and beats most of the other burgers in town, but it wasn't the blow-my-mind, amazingly-delicious, perfectly-too-spicy, mess on a bun that I remember so fondly. Hopefully this was an anomaly and not a new trend but other reviews I have seen make me worry a little bit. I still love the place and will eat there at every opportunity so this is probably a really harsh 4-star rating, but it's their own fault for getting my expectations up so high with 20 years of perfection. P.S. - No credit cards. Get over it and carry some cash you crybabies

A good pick by my boyfriend for our first meal in Steamboat Springs. Here's what we ordered: * Beer: One pitcher of New Belgium 2° Below Winter Ale ($11.50) * Spicy Hot Links ($4.50): Soft and meaty on the inside with a crispy, charred skin and a spicy kick. * Rocky Mountain Oysters with cocktail dipping sauce ($6.50): Yes for fried bull testicles! I've only had this appetizer one other time, but Double Z BBQ made it better. Tender and deep fried to perfection. * Large Fries with ranch dressing ($4.50): Hand cut, seasoned fries with a great crunchy texture. Loved them! * Full Rack of St. Louis Style Pork Spareribs ($16.50): Tender, but not fall-off-the-bone. We told our waitress that we were sharing and she split up our rack into two baskets. She also gave us two sides each! I had fries and cole slaw, while my boyfriend had fries and beans. Each order is normally served with only one side. (As if we needed more food at this point. We ordered three appetizers.) Whew, that was a lot of food! 5 stars for beers and BBQ.

Love this place! I am from Steamboat and go here every time I come back. The hoagie, burger, chicken lip sandwich, and hot link sandwich are all awesome. The bbq sauce is very good as well. Everything goes great with a PBR or Sierra Nevada ipa. Double Z has great service, and is among my favorite places to eat.

Pretty good all around. Get the brisket. If you are here for lunch, do a half sandwhich... it will still fill you up. Cash only kinda sucks.

Friendly service, but didn't make up for the slowness and pretty mediocre quality of the food. The outdoor deck, near to the river and the sun that shines onto the deck on sunny days is a plus. Go for the nice spot, not for the food.

Had a great time here with the GF over the weekend. She is the rib hound - so we went with the St. Louis BBQ pork ribs. They were a little tough, but they were still very good. I really liked the BBQ sauce and the GF was gaga over the potato salad. The atmosphere is local dive bar with stuffed wildlife on the walls. The regulars were very friendly. I did frown at the pregnant chick stopping in for a shot and a beer...

This was recommended to us as "the best burger in Steamboat." Geez! I sure hope not. Totally mediocre. Overcooked. Side of beans (NOT hot - but tasted ok) and slaw (we've had way better). We also had a bbq beef sandwich. Again, just ok. Meat not very tender but the portion was big. Fries were ok. Nothing special. Disappointing - because we were really looking forward to a GREAT burger... But honestly? The Wendy's Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger we had on our roadtrip to get here was better. Sorry. Wish I had a better review.

Yup, it's a locals hideout with it's fair share of attitude, but can you say anything about the portions? You get about three whole potatoes freshly cut and fried. Save them for hash browns tomorrow morning. Besides, all BBQ is about the sauce. It was made to cover up what was generally the cheaper cuts of meat. Sorry if it's not Kobe beef.

Came across this little corner store after several friends gave glowing reviews. Who am I to argue with locals? Seating is definitely limited. The front of the restaurant has 2 tables with booth seating. There are 2-3 tables in the hallway right across from the kitchen exit. The back bar has bar seating. So really this place is optimized for take-out. The owner and her husband (the cook) were super nice, as were the wait staff. The menu is small and easy to scan - that's good for a BBQ joint, sticking to the basics and doing them right. I ordered a full rack of pork ribs for $16.50 and it came with two sides. All the meats are smoked there and the sauce is pretty delicious as well. There are sizable looking ribs, not the puny things that you'll get at the big chains. Delicious and not smothered in sauce. Friends ordered pulled pork sandwiches, chicken lips (tenders), and fish and chips. All were extremely happy with the food. I'll definitely stop by on my next trip through town.

My tastebuds may have been biased by a preceding 10-mile run around the Gilpin Lake Loop, but my cheeseburger sure hit the spot. In an act of deviant brilliance, they put cheese on both sides of the burger. Fries are good too. Recommend sitting outside. Just enough away from the rest of the downtown restaurants that it feels less crowded and more relaxed.

This is a great place. Has the local atmosphere and great food without breaking the bank. If you are looking for some BBQ definitely check this place out. A couple tips they only take cash or check and after 6 it starts to get busy and there are not a lot of places to sit.

I'm a fan of Double ZZ, but if you don't like spicy BBQ (like my partner), it can be a challenge. In general, I think they do ribs best. Their pork is sliced, not pulled, and the brisket is just ok. Decent beer selection, service seemed stretched a bit thin, but that could be summer season (still, near the 4th, so you'd think they would be ready).

Look really no excuse in this day and age, for a restaurant to not accept debit transactions. I get it - small town joint, whatever. As a business, technology is nothing to fear. Join us in the 21st Century, and then maybe I'll come back.

Exceptionally poor service. June 25, 2011 - at 1.30pm waited over 1/2 an hour for the check.... as did the table next to ours. Initially waitstaff combined our check with table next to ours "not sure why I assumed you were together" - took 1/2 hour to "fix". When we went to the register and asked to talk with the manager/owner the response was rude and unapologetic. We asked to speak with the owner and were told that he (manager - Chad) would not provide us with any way of contacting him and then he snapped sarcastically "really think that would make you feel better - to talk to the owner? - really??" If we owned this place we would want to know how poor the service was and how rude the staff was when we requested a check - wouldn't you? Won't be back - wouldn't recommend it based on service.

If you want local flavor, friendly people, and no stuck up tourists, then drop by Double Z. Delicious food, reasonable prices and good beer selection. And, again, no tourists (except us, that is). Had the ribs and a burger. Meat, sauce all good. Cole slaw and beans fantastic as well. Give it a try -- you'll love it!

I really hope this isn't the best bbq in Steamboat. I had two decisions- the Smokehouse or this place. Well, I'm pretty sure I chose the wrong eatery. The inside was musky and kinda creepy- the place where men sit at the bar and stare at anything remotely feminine that moves past. The whole up and down acknoledgement is tasteless IMO, and I can do without it when I'm eating. The food was also not so great- I was served molded tomatoes! Boo! There was a dish tub with ribs that was sitting a table by the bathrooms from the time I got there, and was still hanging out by the time I left. You know Texans aren't the most civilzed group of people, but we don't let our meat just "hang." Cook it, eat it. Don't leave it sitting around like a lost puppy on Flag Day. I think they might specialize in the burgers- but this is a bbq place... so... I suppose the beer was reasonably priced- but I can't really say much more about the place. Nice patio? I'll try Smokehouse next time for sure. You might be wise to do the same.

Step 1: Fly into Denver Step 2: Pick up rental vehicle Step 3: Enjoy scenic drive to Steamboat Springs Step 4: Double Z for lunch or early dinner Step 5: Check in to hotel For me, that is the proper order of events. I stumbled onto this place about 13 years ago, and I have to tell you, I fell in love before I ever set foot inside. As my wife and I were walking up to the restaurant for the first time, we saw a dog playing with a bicycle tire in the middle of the quiet street at the edge of town. He would leap into the air with it, dance around in a few circles with it, throw it with his mouth, then chase after it to start all over again. It was adorable, and quite a show. We so enjoyed the food that we went back for dinner the following night. After we finished, we walked down to the little park at the end of the street, where we came face-to-face with a wolverine. Like three feet away face-to-face. I know they say there were no confirmed wolverine sightings in Colorado until more recently, but I will confirm that we saw one in 1999, and it was awesome in that "I will remember this on my deathbed" way. Finding Double Z resulted in some really memorable moments. I'm the sort of person who, when coming across a good thing, feels no reason to mix it up or further experiment. What I found at Double Z was the "Hogie" (someday I have to ask if that's somebody's name, or just misspelt). Barbecued beef, a hot link and cheese team up with a crusty french roll to achieve a sum much greater than its parts; slather some ranch dressing on that bad boy, and you have yourself one hell of a sandwich. I have dreams about how good it is. It's the only thing I'd ever order. Why ruin perfection? Great. Now I feel the need to fly to Colorado for a sandwich. That's rational. But that's the kind of thinking Double Z inspires in me; it's like a drug, and I cannot wait for my next hit of sublime barbecue deliciousness.

I do not know what to say ... Our waitress basically scares us the entire time .. We tried being super nice and she really just barked at us more... 8pm is not to late for dinner .. We ordered some beer and sodas and dinner.. I Do not think we were any kind of table out of the norm.. Pretty sure I will never go back in fact I am scared to go back .. Might order delivery because BBQ is Slim in his town but I also saw people bagging to go orders and they were all really angry while cooking and bagging. Steamboat has a reputation for being very friendly .. Almost afraid to post this YIKES

Do you like dry, fatty, tough ribs? Do you like BBQ made from some of the finest ingredients including A-1 sauce and Heinz 57 steak sauce? If you like all that with the fact that there's no place to sit, you'll love this place. I usually give places the benefit of the doubt, but this place is overrated and overpriced for the quality of food. Take my advice, try another restaurant. There are a couple others in Steamboat that have to be better. Those that give this place a high review obviously haven't had good authentic BBQ.

If you're looking for a food hangover you have come to the right spot. First, check your attitude because if you're going to compare zz to your grand mamas bbq from north Carolina then you will be sadly disappointed. locals come for a hangover cure with Great beef and pork and a beer from Mary back in the bar. if you are a vegetarian then just leave. (but the salads are excellent) List of DO's / Don'ts 1. Don't substitute your french fries for Onion Rings, They hand cut their fries every morning. 2. Don't get delivery, half the fun is going there. 3. Don't order the Beef ribs- Go PORK 4. Do Order some Rocky Mountain Oysters. 5. Do expect a wait, this place can only hold so many people. 6. there is no dessert because the oven is occupied by keeping the ribs warm.

I stopped in for a quick bite while in town for work and was not that impressed. The place did have a cool vibe and the service was quick but overall the ribs were okay and a little pricy. I can see why people could come back for the drink specials and patio, but not for the price of the food.

Ultimate local hangout. Went on a Thursday night with a big party, at first they couldn't seat us and we were walking out and the bartender ran out and flagged us down. She had cleared off a section of the back bar for us a bought us our first round. Amazing service, great BBQ (pork ribs and rocky mountain oysters), and a cool atmosphere. Be sure to get there early because they fill quickly and have a small seating area.

The layout of this "watering hole" is somewhat awkward. You can either be stuck in an overly large booth, seated at tables right next to the kitchen or in the back of the restaurant. The seating is my only complaint! Great BBQ and even better fries.

DoubleZZ is the Steamboat insiders hangout. If you'd like to meet ski patrol, mountain staff, mountain bikers, Steamboat natives and locals -- plus have some great BBQ -- this is the place. Sit on the deck in summer.

Gross little hallway to eat at unless you sit outside on the deck or on the back patio in the alley next to the dumpsters. Come here for the salad, it's pretty good. The BBQ sandwiches are made of pork that is shaven off in huge chuncks that are dry and weird tasting, definitely mask it with their sauce as much as possible. Watch out for the locals that hang out in this joint, old creepy angry wife-hitters. Oh and don't speak to the bartenders unless spoken to, they are needlessly mean. I guess it's part of their jive/atmosphere. You are definitely stepping out of Steamboat when you visit this place. Definitely NOT one of Steamboat best watering holes! that guy must hit his wife, seriously.

Great sauce, but it was necessary to cover the mediocre smoke. Large portions, but still a bit pricey for a BBQ joint. We sat in the bar. The bartender was friendly enough, but she ate her lunch and talked with a friend while she served us and other customers. She handled it well, but it's still pretty unprofessional.

Shabby-decor defines this locals hangout. Back bar is still the small-town crowd. The place serves a great salad, good ribs, and tasty chicken. The fries are consistently disappointing--why aren't they crispier? The little front deck is nice on sunny days.

Locals place. Great BBQ sauce.. don't bother getting a salad, you'll be disappointed.. Go hungry the portions are generous. This is definitely a more rustic place, would be friendly to bring kids or hang out at the bar. A friendly crowd, laid-back atmosphere, and good prices make this a fun place to go for dinner.

Food was good, my hubby (who is from TX) loved his sandwich. It was a combo with what they call hot links and BBQ beef. Both meats were very generous and ver flavorful. He said it was one of the best BBQ sandwiches he ever had. I order the steak sandwich. I was a full NY strip steak with two small pieces of bread. This was not meant to be a sandwich. The steak was good, had a bit too much grizzle for me, but the parts that weren't fatty were tasty. We both had the beans and slaw side. The beans had diced onion, which I didn't like in the beans, but they had an ok flavor. The slaw was good.

I thought it was wonderful! While I may be far from a true BBQ connoisseur I was more than happy with both the taste and portions of my meal. Sure the seating was tight but the staff was friendly and they had a decent selection of beer on hand. And thats all I really need where BBQ is considered.

Nice local hangout with good food at a reasonable price Limited seating ribs were plentiful but a little dry Moose heads and wooden skis add to the local character Three of us had dinner with some beers for $50

I love this place! This is Steamboat BBQ - lose your 'tude if you're coming here from other states that you're comparing bbq, cause you're eating high-country bbq. What you won't find here are boring, run of the mill tourists - this is a locals joint, so when you belly up to the bar you may be sitting next to the road crew just getting off their shift from plowing snow all day. The food - delicious and generous servings. I always go for the pork sandwich with fries. Yes the pork is sliced and not pulled - there are other ways to serve bbq pork and it doesn't always have to be pulled. The pork has a good amount of a spicy with a hint of sweet sauce - just perfect, served on a bun with onions. The bun is perfect to not steal the show from the pork. The fries are made in house - crispy with just enough salt and not drenched in oil. Wash it all down with a good selection of beers from the bar. The Z has a great deck overlooking the Yampa river which creeps up to the rails in late spring run off. A great place to feed your face after a long day of hitting the slopes or mtn biking!

While on vacation my search for great food in a new town often begins with putting my ear to the ground at the local level confirming truths, dispelling rumors, and hopefully discovering what it is that makes a local favorite so special to the person that calls my vacation destination their home. In Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the dining options are plentiful and and as usual the friendly residents are happy to share their opinions. After a long (and rewarding) morning of fly fishing on the Yampa I turned to my fishing guide (a 16 year Steamboat resident) for a recommendation for a hearty lunch. He suggested Double Z as a place for great BBQ and a local favorite. We went, and after spending two hours there I came to partially agree with him... There are several things I consider when writing reviews to aid my fellow "foodies" in the everyday adventure of finding the next great spot to grab a bite to eat. The Double Z had average food, that's all I can say. The BBQ sauce was good, the roll my pulled pork sandwich came in was typically plain, and the pulled pork itself was slightly dry (although the sauce came to its rescue). Between entree salads, chicken lips, pork, and beef barbecue our overall sentiment of our group was the food was "fine" but mediocre is not enough to persuade me to visit again next time. Ambience- some nostalgia hung up around the place, wood ceiling and walls, very "highlands ranch-esque" but the poor layout leaves anyone in between the "front" and the "back" of the restaurant stuck between the scorching hot kitchen, the hustle and bustle of the kitchen staff, blocking the dry storage, etc. Yup... That's where we we stuck. Service? HORRIBLE. From the time we ordered we waited an hour and twenty five minutes before we even saw our food. After forty five minutes we inquired and our waitress wasn't the least embarrassed to tell us it should be up next. I could see why the locals say they liked the place... It seemed everyone else but us would get their food before us. Thirty minutes later, we witnessed plate after plate go out before we got our food. Waters were empty, our beer pitcher order was a 15 minute process in itself, we were far from a priority of any of the staff. Our disinterested waitress told us they were just "busy" and offered no apology. We commented to another staff person who suggested we call our food in ahead next time so we don't have to wait so long. No one seemed to care. Its been years since receiving such poor service and never in my life has the server/staff been so un-apologetic and indifferent. A basic rule in life, in business, and in the restaurant industry especially is that character defining moments come when confronted with a problem or a challenge. This place failed miserably and won't ever see a dime out of my pocket again. With so many other great places to try in Steamboat (Mahogony Ridge, Mambo Italiano, Slopeside Grill) I suggest everyone else in the YELP community do themselves a favor and visit other places who actually want to earn your business.

I hope my experience is isolated, but this was the worst food experience that I have had in years. We waited 1 hour before getting food and when we did, the chicken fingers, BBQ, and hamburger reminded me of something that I would get in the frozen section of a grocery store. The bill was 60.00 and and the service wasn't that great. I pride myself on not being someone who doesn't get bent out of shape over things like this, but this was extraordinarily poor on every level. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Not worth the price. Tough meat, dry bread, not great BBQ.

(3)Bill G.
This place is great! Home cooking at very reasonable prices, especially for a ski town.
(5)Christopher S.
(5)Allison P.
The layout of this "watering hole" is somewhat awkward. You can either be stuck in an overly large booth, seated at tables right next to the kitchen or in the back of the restaurant. The seating is my only complaint! Great BBQ and even better fries.
(4)Alden G.
DoubleZZ is the Steamboat insiders hangout. If you'd like to meet ski patrol, mountain staff, mountain bikers, Steamboat natives and locals -- plus have some great BBQ -- this is the place. Sit on the deck in summer.
(5)Andre E.
(1)Bo H.
(3)jee S.
Maybe Steamboat Springs best watering hole. Located down town.
(5)Chris W.
Local bar with limited seating but unique atmosphere and very good ribs and pulled pork sandwiches.
(4)joe b.
Shabby-decor defines this locals hangout. Back bar is still the small-town crowd. The place serves a great salad, good ribs, and tasty chicken. The fries are consistently disappointing--why aren't they crispier? The little front deck is nice on sunny days.
(3)Brian L.
if you are looking for good service go elsewhere, if you are looking for great bbq eat here. everything we had was great and their bbq sauce is top notch.
(4)bill s.
Great food. Hamburgers are huge as are the BBQ sandwiches. Best fries in town.
(5)Sara F.
(3)Angela G.

(4)William B.
Nice local hangout with good food at a reasonable price Limited seating ribs were plentiful but a little dry Moose heads and wooden skis add to the local character Three of us had dinner with some beers for $50
(4)Victor M.
The best bbq in steamboat. no competition. i've had the ribs, chicken, etc. the sides are pretty good too. take from a bbq freak -- go hog wild.

Definitely a great local spot, loved the bar. The food was ok, I am always disappointed when a BBQ place doesn't offer pulled pork :-(
(3)Casey B.
The best wet BBQ in Steamboat.
(4)Daniel L.
I got a full rack of St. Louis ribs. There was one rib separate from a full rack and it was amazingly tender and delicious. The rest were veeeery dry and tough. I was so disappointed. I wouldn't recommend this place.
(2)Dave N.
Every ten years I come here and it's the same great food every time.. Keep it simple always works
(5)George P.
The BBQ was great but not a "G rated restaurant". The food was great though. A restaurant that explains Steamboat Springs character.
(3)Pablo A.

Recommended as Best of Boat..... Not sure why! Terrible service and food was just okay! Not worth the wait!

This place is way overrated. The ribs were hard and chewy, the menu was meger and he prices were way too high. Oh, and they don't take credit cards........but do take checks.? Hello 1978........
